Computer Problems Do Not Rock!

I tell ya, when one thing breaks around here, ten more soon follow. That seems to be the way it works. Last week it was light bulbs blowing like crazy and this week it seems to be computer equipment.

Hubby works from home most of the time so his computer is like his baby. It has to have all of the latest updates, which means we are adding things to it quite often. He builds his computer from the ground up, rather than buying one from a store. This usually makes the computer last longer. However, he has had a time keeping a power supply that will work. I think he has already gone through two of them in the past several months. Today, it seems that our router is dying. We are wireless so that we can work from anywhere in the house. My connection has been spotty at best today and it frustrates me to no end. So, that means it's time for a new router. Sheesh! At this point, I'm willing to buy a used cisco router!

When I get on the computer, I just want it to work. I don't care how or why but I want it to work. I don't want to know all of the technical details. Just make it go. LOL! I'm thinking that I probably need to learn a little more about these things so that I might be of more help to hubby when they break. I'm sure he would love to work in peace rather than have me in his ear asking him how long it will take to fix it and how much it will cost!

Gamefly

Man oh man, what will they think of next! If it isn't cool enough that you can get movies delivered to your mailbox, now a company called Gamefly delivers games to your mailbox! It will be all the rage, mark my words. If you've got a PS2, PS3, Xbox, Game Cube, Nintendo, Game Boy, or Wii user in your home, watch out!

Gamefly offers the same kind of service that Netflix and Blockbuster Online does. They have over 5,000 titles, offer free shipping and returns, and no late fees. I showed it to the girls earlier and they were very excited. They have an Xbox and they enjoy playing it together. We don't buy many games because they're just too expensive! Of course, when they have their own money and want to invest in a new game, they can but almost always buy a used copy.

The subscription is a bit pricey but I found some Gamefly coupons that are worth using. I'm not sure we're ready to commit to a subscription but for hard core gamers, this is probably much cheaper than going to a store and renting games on a regular basis. It is worth checking out if you have a gamer in your house.

Just Say No To Pop Ups!

One of the many advantages I've noticed since switching from a Windows machine to a Mac, has been the lack of pop up windows. Those things drive me nuts! I really haven't had a problem with them since getting this Mac. It is very seldom that I've had to worry with them. The kids still have a Windows based machine so they still use a blocker. I hope that I never have to go back to a Windows machine but if I do, I will definitely have a good popup blocker so that I can maintain my sanity. I remember having to deal with pop ups to the point that I would just shut things down and turn the computer off. Other times, there would be so many of them, that it would freeze up my computer. You talk about anger! If I could get my hands on the people who made pop up ads possible, I think I may give them a good smackin'!

This is just one of the many advantages I've found since we "wandered to the dark side." I remember thinking years ago that Macs were useless. Fifteen years later, I find myself wondering why we didn't make the switch sooner.

Web Site Design

For various reasons, I am going to be moving to a dot com address soon. I've been thinking about it for some time and I have even registered the domain name. It'll have the same name but the look will probably change. My husband created my blogspot template and I would love for him to create a new one for my dot com. However, he is insanely busy with projects right now and this just isn't going to happen. So now begins my search for a web site design company .

I think the way a Web site looks is very important. I visit many places on the internet and I'm drawn to the ones with really good design. Having said that, I look for the same thing when looking at companies who design Web sites for a living. I've seen some pretty scary ones out there! Designing has become a pastime for many people and they have good work. However, I can tell the difference between someone who does it as a hobby and the professionals. If I were to start a business, I would definitely want a professional to do it. I wouldn't take any chances there. For me, having a dot com is just as important. My blog, or any other Web site I have for that matter, reflects me. If people come to my site and have a hard time finding things, they will not come back. Since I love socializing so much, I want people to come back!

It's How Small?

Y'all know I mentioned that our oldest daughter is saving her money to purchase a laptop . She uses a computer a lot for school and wants to be able to be mobile if she needs to. I think it's a great idea and she has to save her own money to buy it. It will be her first big purchase and I think she will learn a great lesson about savings.

Anyway, I've been doing some research on different laptops and I found this really cool one that weighs only two pounds! It has a 7" wide screen. It's made by Asus and is adorable. It's too small for her but I thought it was the neatest thing I'd seen in a long time. I was unaware that a laptop that small even existed. When you have time, Google Asus Eee PC and take a look for yourself. It's just one more reason that I continue to be amazed by how quickly technology changes.

Flash Drives

My husband loves electronic gadgets. He is like a kid in a candy store anytime we go to an electronics store. He buys alot of things online and has spent hours doing research on various electronics items. Not long ago, he expressed a need for a flash drive. I thought he was nuts and told him that he'd never use such a device. He won that argument and proceeded to order one. Since he got that little thing, he has used it more times than I care to admit. Since he works from home most of the time, the flash drive really comes in handy. Without it, there's no way he could work from home because he couldn't easily transport his files. It seems they are very popular with most business people who need to have portable data. It's smaller than a money clip so it looks pretty cool also. Most of them even come with a neat little neck strap so you can just throw it on and go. I'm learning to embrace the flash drive. I am thankful for it because without it, hubby would be stuck in a lonely cubicle all day!
